Topaz gets trapped in fence

Topaz

Alpacas can be deceptively large with their winter coat on but Topaz is a large alpaca. One afternoon I was walking to the stable and noticed him inside two fences. Inside two fences that are about 7 inches apart. Fortunately both fences were flexible. Evidently he had started to graze on the grass between the two fences and kept moving forward with his head down. By the time he realized he could not turn around, and backing up never crossed his mind, he was stuck.

So he kept moving forward until he got to the end of the fence row. The only way he could go was to turn left. Once he did that he was now between a pipe fence and a chain link fence not as flexible so he just cushed!!

Now he was down between a pipe and a 7' t-post and chain link. I tried to lift him but I did not have the strength to un-wedge him. I called my neighbor for help but he was not at home. I went to the stable and got halter and lead and some wire cutters.

I cut the wires he was hung up in but still could not budge him. I put the halter and lead on because when I got him free he would be in a paddock with cattle and I just did not want to run a race after him.

I kept trying to budge him he was looking at me with sad eyes. If you have ever seen an Alpacas big eyes you will know the effect that had on me so I held his head and talked to him as if I thought he would understand!! Well, either he got tired of me talking to him or he understood me because he pushed himself up and I was able to pull him backwards and out. We had a long walk because we had to walk through my neighbors ranch and back down the road to get him home. He was scarred but we finally got him back home.

The fence line he walked down
He was stuck here
Cut him out of here
